Yesterday was a successful shopping trip, I got zippers and expanding foam and silicone and some other stuff I wanted to get.
I found out that mixing silicone with mineral spirits degrades the silicone, so you should use 'xylene' if you want to thin it. Then I read that xylene is rather on the harmful side and that you could mix silicone with acrylic paint. Oooh, thinks I, two birds, one stone. So I skipped on the thinner and made myself some silicone paint.
Note: silicone paint is EVIL to work with. Get something to thin it if you decide to try it, it is very thick and sticky and will drag the piece around as you try to paint it. Don't get it on anything and don't use good brushes either because it will not be coming off.
So, the skin pieces look ok but I am not very happy with them. The silicone was still tacky this morning but hopefully it will be all set up by tonight.
(Acrylic paint is actually supposed to help it set *faster*, apparently silicone uses moisture in the air to cure and acrylic paint is water based so it works for that too.)
I also filled the head horns with expanding foam so they'll be nice and strong, and started pulling off velcro and sewing in zippers. Once the zippers are done I'll start attaching the remaining pieces - ears, eyes, horns, not teeth yet since they'll be sealing up the mouth which is the last opening.
